The Foundations
Eight short lessons. Read them once, and come back whenever you need them.
Lesson 1
What is a New Moon?
The New Moon is the start of the Moon's 29.5-day cycle, the moment the slate is wiped clean. The Moon sits between the Earth and the Sun, so its lit side faces away from us and the sky looks moonless.
What happens in the sky. Every 29.5 days the Sun, Moon and Earth line up. We get 12 or 13 New Moons a year, and each one falls in a different zodiac sign.
What it means for you. The New Moon is the seed point. Nothing has taken shape yet, which makes it the ideal moment to choose a direction before the month chooses one for you.
The cycle in brief
- New Moon: set intentions, plant seeds.
- Waxing Crescent: take the first steps.
- First Quarter: meet resistance and commit.
- Full Moon (about two weeks later): see what has taken shape.
- Waning phases: integrate, release, rest.
- Next New Moon: begin again.
Remember: the sign tells you the quality of the energy. Your house, which you'll find in Lesson 4, tells you where in your life it lands.
Lesson 2
Why set intentions?
An intention is a conscious direction you choose before life's demands choose one for you. It is not a wish and it is not a goal. It is the filter through which you make decisions, spend your attention and take action for the next 29.5 days.
Four principles
- Go first. Most people react to their month. An intention means you start it with a direction.
- Work with the current. When your intention matches the house the New Moon activates for you, you're moving with the energy rather than against it.
- Be specific. A vague intention gives your attention nowhere to go. Name what you want, how it will feel and the first aligned action.
- Let cycles build. Each New Moon stands alone, but each one also builds on the last. The next New Moon will either extend your intention or open a new one.
What you plant in the dark is what grows toward the light.
Lesson 3
Your rising sign, the key to your map
Your rising sign is the one thing you need to make this journal personal. It decides which area of your life each New Moon activates.
Sun sign vs rising sign. Your Sun sign comes from your birth date and describes your core self. Your rising sign (also called the Ascendant) is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It describes how you meet the world, and it sets the order of the houses in your chart.
Why it matters. Two people born on the same day can have different rising signs, so the same New Moon lands in different areas of their lives. That's why generic Sun-sign horoscopes often feel off.
How to find it. You'll need your date, time and place of birth. Enter them into any free birth chart calculator and look for "Ascendant" or "Rising".
Don't know your birth time? Use your Sun sign. Treat your Sun sign as your 1st house and count forward from there. This is called a solar chart. It's a widely used and meaningful starting point, though it's less precise than your rising sign. If you find your birth time later, simply switch over.
Already know your chart? Use your rising sign. If your Sun sign readings resonate too, you can track both.
Lesson 4
The 12 houses
Your birth chart is divided into 12 houses, and each one governs an area of life. Each month the New Moon lands in one of them, which tells you where your focus belongs for that cycle.

Signs vs houses. In the natural zodiac, Aries rules the 1st house, Taurus the 2nd, and so on through Pisces and the 12th. In your chart, the houses start from your rising sign. For a Pisces rising, Pisces is the 1st house, Aries is the 2nd, and so on.
Lesson 5
Above & below the horizon
A horizontal line runs across every birth chart, from your Ascendant on the left to your Descendant on the right. Houses 1–6 sit below that horizon and houses 7–12 sit above it. This one line tells you whether a season is calling you inward to create or outward to expand.

Houses 1–6 · Below the horizon
Plant season
Internal, private, foundational work. You're building the roots before the tree is visible. It isn't inaction; it's the work that decides whether what comes later can hold its weight.
Focus: go deeper, not wider.
Good for: clarifying who you are, building your offer, writing, creating, setting up systems and routines, nurturing your home and body.
Visibility: low broadcast, high depth.
Houses 7–12 · Above the horizon
Bloom season
Outward, public, relational work. What you built in the dark now meets the light.
Focus: go outward and let it be seen.
Good for: launching, partnerships, contracts, investment, teaching, publishing, building reputation and community, then releasing and resting.
Visibility: high visibility, outward momentum.
Houses 1–6: Plant. Houses 7–12: Bloom.
Every season is an invitation, not an instruction. You can still post in a Plant month or create in a Bloom month. The horizon simply shows you where the energy flows most easily.
Lesson 6
The four quadrants
The 12 houses group into four quadrants of three houses each. Read in order, they trace a full arc: from knowing yourself, to building your world, to stepping out with others, to being seen and then letting go.

| Quadrant |
Houses |
Season |
The work |
| Q1 · Personal Identity |
1, 2, 3 |
Plant |
Clarify who you are, what you value and how you speak. Inner work before outer expression. |
| Q2 · External Identity |
4, 5, 6 |
Plant |
Build your home base, creative practice and daily systems. Behind the scenes over broadcast. |
| Q3 · External Expansion |
7, 8, 9 |
Bloom |
Collaborate, sign contracts, attract investment, share your ideas. Other people carry the work outward. |
| Q4 · Personal Expansion |
10, 11, 12 |
Bloom |
Let your reputation show, be held by community, then release and rest before the wheel turns. |
How to use it. Each quadrant gives you a finer read than the horizon alone. A Q1 month is about you and your message. A Q2 month is about structures and rhythm. A Q3 month is about other people. A Q4 month is about legacy, community and completion.
Lesson 7
The formula and your personal map
Three steps turn any New Moon into personal guidance: sign → house → action.
- New Moon in a sign. The sign sets the tone of the month. Aries is bold, Taurus is grounded, Gemini is curious.
- The sign lands in your house. Count forward from your rising sign (or Sun sign) to see which house it activates, or use the grid on the next page.
- The house defines the action. It tells you the area of life and whether it's a Plant or Bloom month.
How to count. Your rising sign is house 1, and the next sign is house 2. Example: for a Pisces rising, Pisces is house 1, Aries is house 2, Taurus is house 3 and so on. A Libra New Moon lands in the 8th house, which makes it a Bloom month in Q3.

Lesson 8
The six-month cycle, from seed to harvest
Every intention you plant at a New Moon has a natural harvest point six months later, at the Full Moon in the same sign. This is one of the most powerful and least-talked-about rhythms in the sky.
How it works. A Full Moon happens when the Moon sits opposite the Sun. The Full Moon in Aries can only happen when the Sun is in Libra, six months after Aries season. So the seed you planted at the Aries New Moon in spring is illuminated by the Aries Full Moon in autumn, in the same house of your chart.
Why it matters. A single month is often too short to see results. Six months is long enough for real growth, and short enough to stay connected to what you asked for. It gives every New Moon intention a built-in check-in date.
The horizon twist. When the Full Moon lights up your house, the Sun is in the opposite house, on the other side of your horizon. What you planted below is seen while the Sun moves through your Bloom houses, and what you launched above comes back into your private world to be integrated. Plant and Bloom are always in conversation.
